Assumption Abbey, a Benedictine Monastery, sits high and unexpected on the West Dakota prairie. The spires of the cathedral can be seen a few miles north of Interstate 94 on the skirts of the tiny town of Richardton, North Dakota. My uncle, Father Richard Wilhelmi, a teacher and scholar, spent much of his life here. He was chosen as the last son of a very large Catholic family to enter the priesthood. Many of our family reunions were held on the scenic and well-tended grounds of Assumption Abbey. When we pass by the cathedral, memories beckon.
