Born in Wyoming and raised in Montana, Amber is a gal with gumption who follows her passion as an adventurer and artist. WOOD magazine declared her as one of “America’s Woodworking Greats.” She is one of the first women to be inducted into the Stetson Craftsman Alliance. DIY continues to feature her in their TV “Wood Sculpting” series and the Oxygen Network filmed her for the “Pure Oxygen” show. A life-size bison sculptural bench will soon be placed permanently at Gallatin Yellowstone International Airport. Sharing her art and passion, she recently spoke at TEDx “Dreamers Who Do.” Amber’s custom dream studio is a walk through the woods near her cabin home at the end of the road near the top of a mountain above Livingston.
“I am fueled by adventure both inside and outside of the studio. Compelled to explore, I push boundaries, experiment, and scare myself. I’ve been shipwrecked on a Mexican island, stepped on by a bear while sleeping alone in the backcountry, nearly blown off the top of Mt Rainier, flipped in Class Five rapids, and completely mesmerized while climbing frozen waterfalls. Exploring, I push my physical and mental limits while creating art and living life. My approach to creativity is similar to my adventures. I constantly reach beyond my comfort zone with new materials, concepts and scale. The sculptures are born from subconscious and conscious vision, stories, emotions and imagery.”
“I have experienced spiritual epiphanies while adventuring and living in the mountains. Moments of soul-bearing insight have come to me bereft of pomp…totally unexpected. I want to share those heart-split-wide-open moments and bring a bit of Momma Nature’s grandeur and grace to people. Influenced by Native American feather baskets I saw in the Denver Art Museum a few winters ago, the niches in my recent reliquary series are “feathered.” My obsession with old barbwire weaves itself into the art along with a life-long fascination with animal skulls. The ‘Neruda Series’ is eighteen sculptures titled with lines from Pablo Neruda’s love poems.
I embrace life with its contradictions and plunge headlong into the marvel. I offer these sculptures as pages torn from a journal of my journey.”
